University Christian Housing seeks to accommodate
students' desires to study abroad while living in the house, but it
does require some additional planning and coordinating by the student ahead of time (approximately
6-9 months in advance). Second, third and fourth year returning
students have the option of coordinating their tenancy with another
returning student, so as to occupy only one spot the following year.
For example, a student who seeks to study abroad fall quarter of the
following year may coordinate their tenancy with another returning
student who perhaps seeks to be gone winter and spring quarters to
study abroad or for another pre-approved absence (i.e. missions trip,
volunteer program, getting married, etc.) As of 2008, UCH no longer accepts "quarter-only" or temporary replacement residents, as this is often difficult to plan for and adjust to for the current residents, the new incoming student and UCH coordinators.
University Christian Housing desires to be a "pro-study abroad"
organization and truly believes international experiences add depth and
richness to an educational program. Keeping in mind, the high demand
for Christian housing in the University District, the limited number of
spots available in all the houses, and the large number of students
willing and able to be present for the full academic year, make
studying abroad while living with UCH both a privilege and something
that needs to be coordinated and pre-approved with the Housing
Coordinator the year prior to being absent. Unfortunately, in general
UCH does not offer this option to incoming first year students, however
we handle each student case on an individual basis and exceptions can
be made in rare circumstances with just cause. (If a
first year student needs to be abroad during their first year in the
house, in most cases they will need to cover their housing payments while gone.)
Please contact the UCH Coordinator during application season each spring for specific instructions on how to apply for and reserve a "study abroad spot" for the following year. Lease agreements will be modified to reflect appropriate tenancy dates.
